Tamko Underlayment & Deck Repair: The West Covina Owner’s Guide
If your Tamko roof has a failing underlayment or deck section, here’s the short version: we stock Tamko-compatible underlayment and deck repair materials on our trucks, and most West Covina repairs run $650 – $1,850 installed, depending on how many deck sheets and how much underlayment we’re replacing. We can typically get eyes on the problem within a day or two, not weeks. Most homeowners discover the issue the ugly way: a ceiling stain after rain, granules in the gutter, or a soffit that’s started to sag where the deck has rotted through.

The part that fails first is almost never the shingle you can see. It’s what’s underneath: the underlayment, the water barrier between your Tamko shingles and the wood deck. In West Covina’s dry-summer, wet-winter climate, underlayment bakes in the heat then gets saturated during storm season, and over a 15 to 20 year run, that cycle breaks it down faster than it would in a milder coastal climate. When that happens, water reaches the deck, and plywood or OSB rots. That’s when a simple underlayment replacement becomes a deck repair too.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To
This applies to any Tamko shingle system installed over a wood deck, but we see the most underlayment and deck failures on three specific lines: Tamko Heritage (the classic 3-tab and architectural line), Tamko Titan XT, and Tamko StormShield, which is actually the brand’s premium peel-and-stick underlayment product. If you’re not sure what you have, check the paperwork from your last roof install, or look for a faded Tamko label on a bundle in your attic or garage. No paperwork? A quick way to narrow it down: Heritage shingles are the standard architectural profile you see everywhere; Titan XT is laminated with a thicker, irregular edge; StormShield is the black or gray membrane you’d actually see under the shingles if you’re looking at a torn section.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that matters: Tamko’s StormShield is a self-adhering ice-and-water shield, not a standard felt or synthetic underlayment. If your original install used StormShield and a contractor replaces it with basic #15 felt, you’ll get a cheaper repair today and a leak in two winters. We match the Tamko spec on every repair, and we’ll show you the product label before we install it. For decking, we use a minimum of 7/16-inch OSB or 15/32-inch plywood matching what was there, and we’ll flag any deck section that’s gone soft even if it wasn’t the original reason you called.
On OEM versus aftermarket: Tamko makes their own underlayment, and for underlayment itself, we use Tamko product when we can get it same-week. For decking, there’s no “Tamko deck” – Tamko doesn’t manufacture wood. The plywood and OSB we use is the same CDX or OSB sheathing you’d find on any quality repair, just graded for roofing. One clarification up front: Crestview Roofing Co West Covina is an independent service provider, not a Tamko dealer or affiliate.

Signs Your Tamko Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing
- Water stains on ceilings or walls after rain. Water that reaches your ceiling has already passed through the shingles, the underlayment, and the deck. That means at least two layers failed, and the deck is almost certainly involved.
- Granules collecting in gutters or at downspout bases. Tamko shingles shed granules as they age, but a sudden heavy accumulation means the shingle mat is breaking down and exposing the underlayment to direct UV, which it was never designed to handle long-term.
- A sagging or spongy spot when you walk the roof. If the roof surface gives under your weight, the deck has lost structural integrity. That’s rot, not a surface issue, and it won’t get better by resealing anything.
- Daylight visible through attic gaps or a musty attic smell. A musty smell means trapped moisture. Visible daylight through the deck means holes that water is also getting through. Both point to underlayment failure at minimum, deck damage at worst.
- Shingles lifting, curling, or blowing off in patches. Tamko shingles are nailed through the underlayment into the deck. If the deck is rotten, the nails lose their grip and shingles release in patches, not one at a time. That’s a deck failure, not a shingle failure.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
In West Covina, here’s the honest range. A small underlayment-only repair on a single steep section runs $650 – $950. A moderate repair where we’re pulling shingles, replacing a few deck sheets, and new underlayment runs $1,000 – $1,400. A larger section with multiple deck sheets, new underlayment, and re-shingling can land at $1,500 – $1,850. The drivers are deck sheet count and how deteriorated the deck is where it meets the rafters. If we have to sister a rafter or two because the rot got into the framing, add $150 – $400 per rafter.
Every quote includes the parts, the labor, the underlayment, the decking, the shingles we remove and reinstall, and cleanup. It also includes something we don’t make optional: a written price before we start, and a 365-day Done Right Promise on the repair. If our repair fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s in writing, every job, no exceptions. No change orders unless we find structural framing damage you didn’t know about, and if that happens, we stop and show you before doing anything.
If your deck repair is under an existing roof that still has the old underlayment, we’ll also check the surrounding sections for soft spots. We’d rather tell you now than have you call back in eighteen months with a leak two feet from where we just worked.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the split, no games. What you can safely check yourself: look in the attic for dark stains or visible light through the deck boards. Check your gutters for excessive granules. Check your ceilings after the first good rain of the season. That tells you if you likely have a problem, and it costs nothing. What you should not do yourself: walk a steep roof without proper footwear and a harness, pull up shingles to look at underlayment, or try to patch rotted decking from the attic side. Roof work in West Covina means steep pitches, and this is the kind of job where a wrong step on a soft deck section puts you through the ceiling or off the roof. We say that as people who’ve done this for over two decades, including many of the streets around Galster Wilderness Park where the sun exposure is brutal on underlayment.
If you’re not sure whether what you’re seeing is a real problem, call us at (831) 777-6412. We’ll tell you over the phone whether it sounds urgent or not, and we’ll schedule a visit to confirm. No charge to look at photos either. Text them over and we’ll give you an honest take before we ever set foot on the property.
FAQs
Tamko underlayment typically lasts 15 to 20 years in West Covina’s climate, but that number drops to 10 to 12 years if the roof has been poorly ventilated or if the shingles above it were left past their useful life. If your deck is failing under the underlayment, the underlayment itself often became compromised years earlier. Call (831) 777-6412 and we’ll tell you what you’re actually looking at, for free.
In most cases, no – underlayment fails in sheets, and patching a torn or degraded section just moves the leak to the next weak spot. We replace the full section from ridge to eave whenever we touch underlayment. If you’re not sure whether your issue is underlayment or a deck problem, call us and we’ll work through it honestly before you spend a dime.
A small underlayment and deck repair is usually a one-day job. A larger section with multiple deck sheets and new shingles takes two days. We’ll tell you the exact window before we start, and we’ll send you before and after photos of the work so you can see what was replaced without climbing up there yourself.
We stock Tamko-compatible underlayment, including StormShield for ice-and-water situations, and standard decking materials on most of our West Covina trucks. On the rare day we need something specific to your roof that we don’t have on board, we source it same day or next morning. Call (831) 777-6412 to confirm what we have before we roll out.
